PEMF
PEMF ~ Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields
PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy can be beneficial for animals in various ways:
Pain Relief: PEMF therapy has been shown to reduce pain by promoting the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers. This can be particularly helpful for animals suffering from arthritis, injuries, or recovering from surgery.
Inflammation Reduction: PEMF therapy can help reduce inflammation by improving blood flow and lymphatic circulation. This can aid in faster healing and recovery from injuries or inflammatory conditions.
Enhanced Healing: PEMF therapy promotes cellular repair and regeneration by enhancing cellular metabolism and increasing oxygenation. This accelerates the healing process of wounds, fractures, and soft tissue injuries.
Muscle Relaxation: It can help relax muscles and reduce muscle spasms, which is beneficial for animals experiencing muscle tension or stiffness.
Improved Mobility: Animals suffering from joint conditions like arthritis can benefit from PEMF therapy due to its ability to reduce pain and inflammation, thus improving their mobility and quality of life.
Stress Reduction: PEMF therapy has a calming effect on the nervous system, which can help reduce stress and anxiety in animals, particularly those who are recovering from trauma or surgery.
Non-Invasive Treatment: PEMF therapy is non-invasive and generally well tolerated by animals. It does not involve drugs or surgery, making it a safe alternative or complementary therapy.
General Well Being: Regular use of PEMF therapy may contribute to overall wellness in animals by supporting their body’s natural healing processes and maintaining optimal cellular function.
Before & After the PEMF Session
Preparing an animal for a PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) session involves several steps to ensure their comfort and safety. Here’s a guide on how to prepare an animal for a PEMF session:
Choose a Quiet Environment: Select a quiet and familiar environment where the animal feels relaxed. Most horses do best in their stall and dogs prefer their dog bed. Anywhere they are comfortable and at ease is fine.
Introduction to the PEMF Device: If the animal is not familiar with the PEMF device, we will introduce it gradually so they can sniff and investigate the device so they become accustomed to it before we start the session. With horses, this can take up to 15 minutes. Dogs tend to accept the device more quickly.
Remove Metal and Collars: Remove any metal collars, tags, or jewelry that the animal may be wearing, as these can interfere with the electromagnetic field generated by the PEMF device.
Animals need to be clean and dry. Activity can be resumed immediately after the session. There is no down time if the session is PEMF without hands on massage.
Situations Where PEMF Cannot be Performed
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy is often used to promote healing and manage pain in animals, but there are certain conditions and situations where it should not be used. These contraindications include:
Pregnancy: PEMF therapy should generally be avoided in pregnant animals due to the unknown effects on fetal development.
Pacemakers and other electronic implants: Animals with pacemakers or other electronic implants should not undergo PEMF therapy, as the electromagnetic fields can interfere with the functioning of these devices.
Cancer: PEMF therapy is generally not recommended for animals with cancer, particularly malignant tumors, as there is a concern that it might stimulate cancer cell growth.
Acute infections: In cases of acute infections, PEMF therapy should be used with caution as it might exacerbate the infection.
Epilepsy or Seizures: Animals prone to seizures or with epilepsy should avoid PEMF therapy, as the electromagnetic fields may potentially trigger seizures.
Open wounds or recent surgery: Direct application of PEMF to open wounds or areas of recent surgery should be avoided unless specifically directed by a veterinarian, as it might interfere with the healing process.
Sensitivity to Electromagnetic Fields: Some animals may have an unusual sensitivity to electromagnetic fields, which can cause discomfort or other adverse reactions.
